Prof Anwar Alam kindly responded to the questions regarding his book, and his analysis on Fethullah Gulen and Hizmet Movement
Centre for Hizmet Studies organised a roundtable discussion and book launch event entitled “Being Muslim in the Modern, a case study: The Hizmet Movement” on Wednesday the 23rd of October 2019, with Professor Anwar Alam.
The phrase “Islamic state” is a contradiction in terms, an oxymoron. Similarly, since there is no clergy class in Islam, theocracy is alien to the spirit of Islam. A state is a result of a contract among humans, made up of humans, and it can neither be “Islamic” nor “holy”.
This report discusses the history of the Hizmet movement and its establishment of schools around the world, specifically in Africa. It then explores Turkey's efforts to take over these schools, especially in weak African countries, by incentives or diplomatic pressure and to transfer their assets to the Maarif Foundation.
